The story of Standard English School, Senvawn is one of patience, faith, and hope.
As early as the 1950s, there was already a dream among church leaders and the people of Senvawn to establish a school in the village. Education was seen as a pathway to a better future for the children of the region. However, the Independent Church of India was still young and independent at that time, with very limited financial resources and manpower. Though the dream existed, the means to fulfill it did not.
In 1957, during the 7th General Assembly held at Lakhipur, the School Committee was entrusted with the task of establishing a school in Senvawn. This decision marked the beginning of our story—though at that time, it was only a small spark waiting to become a flame.
For more than six decades, the Presbytery cared for the school as best as it could. Yet the school remained small and struggled to grow. This was not due to neglect in spirit, but rather the harsh reality of financial limitations and the general backwardness of the region. The dream of a thriving school seemed distant.
At one point, matters became even more discouraging. A proposal was made by joint church leaders to amalgamate several schools in the southern hills. As a result, the school at Senvawn was completely abandoned. For many years, the dream of a school for the children of Senvawn seemed lost.
It was indeed a sad chapter in our history.
But God had not forgotten the dream.
As time passed, the Education Department of the Independent Church of India began to take renewed interest in education in the region. During the 151st Executive Council in 2017, a resolution was passed to establish a school in the southern hills of Manipur. A Study Group was formed to examine the feasibility of reopening the school, with the task of completing its study within 2018.
Following this study, the Education Board in 2019 resolved to reopen Standard English School, Senvawn starting from the year 2020.
That same year, a new school building—simple though it was—was constructed with hope and determination.
In January 2020, admissions were opened for Nursery to Class III, and Mr. Matthew James Faiheng (M.A.) was appointed as the Headmaster of the school.
A historic moment came on February 7, 2020, when Standard English School, Senvawn was officially inaugurated by Elder H.T. Vela, Chairman of the Board, in the presence of Rev. Lalhmingthang (Secretary of the Board), Elder David L. Lungṭau, Elder Lalruot Ralsun, and leaders from the village.
Since then, by the grace of God, the school has continued to grow. Every year, more students have joined, and the Education Board has steadily approved the upgrading of classes.
Today, Standard English School, Senvawn offers classes from Nursery to Class IX, and by 2027, the school will proudly present its first Class X candidates.
What once began as a dream in the 1950s has now become a living testimony of perseverance, faith, and the commitment to educate the next generation.

Plans are afoot to build a new building for the school at another location as we have an overwhelming number of students admitted this year (2026). In fact, we have extended all the existing buildings to their utmost limits and we are still running out of space.
By the beginning of 2026, we have already started the groundwork for this – blueprint, gathering of construction materials. Within three months, we hope to have completed the basement and ground floor of the new school building located elsewhere (but in close proximity from the present school).
